Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he was ready to give the same rights to the Hungarian minority in the west of Ukraine that ethnic Ukrainians enjoyed in Hungary at a meeting with Hungarian President Katalin Novák in Kyiv on Thursday, state news wire MTI writes citing an interview with Novák published on index.hu.

"President Zelensky...acknowledged Hungary's assistance and support for the people of Transcarpathia, so far", Novák said, recalling her visit. "I stressed that it is in our mutual interest for the some 150,000 members of the Hungarian minority living in Transcarpathia to be able to exercise fully their minority rights. I made no secret of the fact that, in this regard, meaningful progress is necessary at the moment," she added.

"We agreed to open a new chapter and take meaningful and concrete steps in the interest of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia. We don't need flowery language. The members of the Ukrainian minority living in Hungary enjoy broad rights, and that's a good thing," Novák said.

"The Ukrainian president said Ukraine is prepared to give the members of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine the same [rights] that the members of the Ukrainian minority get in Hungary. That's not a bad starting point," she added.
