Hungary is opposed to a European Commission proposal that would double or triple tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 10% at present, Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy said, according to the conservative daily newspaper Magyar Nemzet.

Several other European Union member states, including Germany, share that position, Nagy said in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Budapest.

He warned that such a protectionist measure ran counter to competition and could start a trend of deglobalization, leading to the establishment of blocs and the start of a trade war instead of connectivity.

The European Parliament is expected to vote on the measure at the end of May or early June.
