Parliament voted this week to eliminate mandatory membership for practicing doctors in the Hungarian Chamber of Physicians (MOK), according to portfolio.hu.

The amendments, which also remove the responsibility for conducting ethical procedures from MOK, were approved in an expedited procedure with a vote of 122 for and 31 against.

The government submitted the amendments to lawmakers a day earlier, calling out MOK for "abusing its power" and "threatening doctors."

MOK earlier instructed its members not to sign contracts necessary for the establishment of a new system for on-call services.

In a statement, the Hungarian Doctors' Union (MOSZ) responded, "the government not only attacked the public body, but the entire Hungarian medical community when - in an extremely discriminatory way, as part of a conceptual procedure - it curtailed the powers of the medical chamber".

"We do not see how this decision will improve health care, the accessibility or quality of care, making the work of the chamber presidency, which advocates for the professional freedom of doctors and sustainable health care, more difficult does not serve the interests of society," it added.
