FINA head thanks Hungary for hosting 2022 worlds

Husain Al-Musallam, the president of international swimming federation FINA, has thanked Hungary for hosting the 19th World Aquatics Championships, which wound up on Sunday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

"The vibrant capital city of Budapest has been the perfect host for the FINA World Championships. The venues and competition have been superb, and the friendly welcome we received from the Hungarian people will be remembered for many years to come," Al-Musallam said.

"The athletes once again shined on the world stage. We thank you for your efforts, and for those who helped put on the showcase global aquatics event in record time," he added.

More than 2,000 athletes from 180 countries competed in front of more than 130,000 spectators during the contest which started on June 18.

Hungary stepped in to host the 2022 worlds after Fukuoka, Japan, which was originally to have hosted, rescheduled because of the pandemic.

Hungary hosted the FINA worlds in 2017, too, and it will host them again in 2027.
