Since February more than 50,000 Hungarians have availed of subsidies to help consumers exchange their old 3G mobile phones for ones compatible with 4G or 5G networks, Hungary's National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) said on Monday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

NMHH said that some 60% of exchanged handsets used 2G technology and around 70% of the total had been purchased at independent phone vendors.

NMHH noted that in July the subsidies scheme was revamped, and now consumers can get HUF 40,000 for their phone upgrades and the HUF 120,000 upper limit for new phone purchases has been scrapped.
