Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó met with Milan Nedeljkovic, the management board member in charge of production at German car maker BMW, in Munich this week, his ministry said, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Szijjártó was informed at the meeting that construction of the BMW plant in Debrecen was "progressing well" and recruitment was underway.

He said Eastern Hungary had become a "new hub" for the European automotive industry with the construction of the BMW plant there.

BMW laid the cornerstone of the vehicle manufacturing plant in Debrecen in the summer of 2022. Production of the fully electric Neue Klasse is set to start there in 2025.

Szijjártó also met with Hubert Aiwanger, the economy minister for the state of Bavaria, while in Munich.
