Close to 3 million passengers traveled to Lake Balaton, Hungary's most popular summer vacation destination, by train between mid-May and the middle of September, state-owned MÁV's passenger unit said on Tuesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Passenger volume was up close to 40% from the same period a year earlier and almost 37% more than in 2019, the year before the pandemic, MÁV-Start said.

The most popular shoreside cities were Balatonlelle, Balatonfüred, Siófok, and Zamárdi.

Most passengers bought their tickets online or using MÁV's mobile application. Around 15% of tickets were bought at station automats.
