DS Smith Wins at Worldstar Global Packaging Awards

Awards

DS Smith, a leading global supplier of sustainable and fiber-based packaging solutions has won an award for industrial packaging at the World Packaging Organisation WorldStar Awards this month.

The award, which was nominated within the Transit category, was for a DS Smith product innovation to replace plastic and foam-based packaging for Raymarine, a marine and boat electronics specialist.

DS Smith and Raymarine created a plastic-free packaging solution that is fully recyclable and designed to provide robust protection for navigation systems and other sensitive electronic products, during transit. The new packaging solution is also designed to be resistant to a variety of climatic conditions when transported by road, air, or water.

DS Smith designer László Kerekes incorporated corrugated cardboard into the packaging solution and replaced previously existing vibration-absorbing foam with alternative and sustainable folded corrugated inserts. The inserts are used to create crumple zones and protect the packaging from external impact while keeping products stable during transit.

Raymarine’s previous packaging contained more than 50% problematic plastic which DS Smith has now successfully eliminated. The new packaging saves up to 60% of CO2 emissions per unit and 2.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, in total.

In addition, corrugated inserts designed for transportation in flat packs have significantly reduced the number of pallets used in inbound logistics by 75% in comparison with the previous foam inserts that were shipped as a single item, and unnecessary waste has been reduced by more than 12%.

Levente Szabó, cluster director, DS Smith Packaging Hungary, notes, "From our manufacturing to our packaging development, we always look for new opportunities to develop innovative circular solutions, and eliminate waste and pollution. Our design was, created to support our valuable customer, Raymarine’s environmental goals, and demonstrates that paper-based sustainable packaging can be used for consumer goods as well as industrial products, without compromise. We are pleased that the hard work of our team has been recognized with this prestigious industry award by the industry."
