More than 10,000 demonstrate against government outside Parliament
Last night’s anti-government demonstration drew a crowd estimated at more than 10,000 to a protest outside the Parliament building that was organized by a group of students and young people. The demonstrators chanted slogans against Fidesz and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in an event that was mostly peaceful, though some stragglers clashed with police after the official event ended.
András Horváth, the tax whistle blower, who spoke about corruption was among the list of speakers. Like other speakers, he hit on the theme of corruption and unfair taxation. The demonstrators said they were protesting “state corruption, increasing taxes and current foreign policy”, while demanding “freedom, transparency, responsible governance and European ideology”. Overall, the sentiment in the crowd was one of frustration with the government.
The demonstration that took place in front of the Parliament building, ran in parallel with more than 20 other demonstrations against the Hungarian government last night, held across Hungary and abroad from Stokholm, to Luxembourg, Brussels, Berlin, Hamburg, London and Bristol.
Although the official demonstration ended at 7:15 p.m. and most of the organizers left the square at that time, shortly thereafter, demonstrators broke through the barricades leading to the steps of the Parliament building and additional riot police were called to the scene in an attempt to drive protestors out of the square. Police resorted to using pepper spray on a handful of unruly demonstrators. The square was clearing by 10 p.m.
