Russia transports fuel rods to Paks by air
Hungary’s nuclear plant in Paks received its first fuel rods transported by air from Russia for the first time in the plant's history, Hungarian business daily Napi Gazdaság reported today, citing the national nuclear energy office (OAH). The OAH reported that the delivery took place at dawn on September 24.
The OAH said it had approved the delivery in line with strict international regulations and recommendations. According to the office, the air delivery is a milestone as it provides an alternative to transport by train and thereby increases the reliability of fuel deliveries.
By mid-summer the authority had already suggested the plan to transport fuel rods by air in light of the conflict in Ukraine. According to the daily, experts estimated that air supply is approximately three times as expensive as by train.
Deliveries by air of nuclear fuel in the region are nothing new and similar arrangements have be implemented in Slovakia and Romania, the paper added.
