Hungary dramatically reduces budget for official development assistance
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs substantially cut its budget for official development assistance from HUF 160 mln last year to HUF 23.7 mln this year, vs.hu reported yesterday. As a member of the EU and OECD, however, Hungary’s obligation would be to contribute 0.33% of its GDP, or HUF 80 bln to the cause, the news portal said.
Moreover, Hungary uses mostly indirect channels to fund international developments, instead of direct funding which would enable better control over allocations of the funds. Hungary’s reduced spending on official development is surprising amid recent rhetoric voiced by Hungaryʼs Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and other government officials, which emphasized zero tolerance towards immigrants and a need to solve immigration matters at the countries of origin, rather than in Hungary, vs.hu added.
