Trade in the shares of the Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE) started on the bourse on Wednesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

At an event to mark the occasion and to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the bourse's re-establishment, György Matolcsy, the governor of the National Bank of Hungary (MNB), the BSE's majority owner, said the exchange could support the convergence of the country and the region.

Since MNB took over ownership of the bourse, it has supported the development of a number of businesses, but he said the "most important achievement" was getting businesses to accept the capital market as a form of financing.

Finance Minister Mihály Varga said the bourse provided companies, from SMEs to multinationals, with a platform to become "global brands".
