A recent emergency government decree will allow service providers to provide refugees with prepaid SIM cards with some restrictions, so that they do not fall into the wrong hands, the Ministry for Innovation and Technology (ITM) said in a statement yesterday, according to profitline.hu.

Several mobile operators have indicated that they would distribute prepaid SIM cards to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The initiative carries the security risk that, in the absence of identification of those helped, the cards could fall into the wrong hands and even lead to serious misuse.

In line with international efforts to combat terrorism, Hungarian subscribers are required to reconcile data annually if they use a prepaid SIM card.

In order to mitigate the risks, the emergency provisions state that the SIM card distributed to refugees may not be handed over to third parties other than close relatives.

Providers must record the subscriber's name, nationality, date of birth, gender, and ID number of the document presented.
