Between 2010 and 2020, 430,000 people migrated from Hungary, with the number of return migrations around 198,000 in the same period, according to a study published in the Demographic Journal of the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

Partly driven by COVID, the trend has been declining, however.

In 2020, the number of emigrations from Hungary was around 18,000, compared to 37,000-51,000 in previous years, while the number of returning migrants in 2020 was 26,000.

According to the study, at the beginning of the decade, half of those who left during the intensive phase of emigration have not returned.

By the end of the decade, Britain had lost much of its traditional popularity among emigrants, with Germany and Austria becoming the leading destinations.
