Shell Hungary, Alteo, and Biotrans are set to launch a nationwide used cooking oil collection program this year, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

By the end of 2022, people will have the opportunity to drop off their used cooking oil in a sealed container or PET bottle at 120 Shell service stations, up from the current 44. The used oil or fat will be turned into 100 % biodiesel for recycling.

People dropping off their used oil will be able to do so via Alteo's dedicated 240-liter plastic collection containers. The filled containers will be transported to Alteo's partner Biotrans's own site, where the collected used oil will be transferred to larger containers. After the sedimentation process, it is transported to biofuel plants where it is used to produce biodiesel. This is then added by fuel retailers to motor vehicle fuels in a legally defined proportion to reduce emissions from transport.

"Net zero-emission operations and steps towards a sustainable future are among the most important business objectives for Shell, both globally and in Hungary. By collecting and recycling used cooking oil, we are working with our customers to reduce our environmental footprint and promote a circular economy," said Andrea Istenesné Solti, President of Shell Hungary.

"At Alteo we know that the circular economy is not only our future but also our present. We are constantly looking for collaborative partners, both within and outside the industry, with whom we can work together on initiatives to support a change of mindset, in addition to finding good business solutions together," said Alteo CEO Attila Chikán, Jr.

He added that the system set up for recycling helps to protect our living water and soil by ensuring that the cooking oil converted into biodiesel does not end up in the sewage system or in the digestion pit.

The decision by Shell Hungary will allow Alteo to extend the joint work with Biotrans that started last December and make the CseppetSem! program, which is now available in more than 900 municipalities, more easily accessible to more people.
