Hungarian agribusiness Karotin is developing a system that will reverse soil degradation and support sustainable soil management in a HUF 545 million R&D project, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Presenting the project on Wednesday, head researcher Iván Czakó said Karotin won HUF 309 mln in the European Union and state support for the project that runs until the spring of 2025.

The system will use machine learning to support decisions on soil management and choice of crops drawing on a database of soil types and attributes as well as cultivation techniques and microclimates across the country, he added.

Karotin is Hungary's biggest producer of alfalfa pellets. It had net revenue of HUF 1.7 bln in 2021, public records show.
