Farmgate prices up 17.4% in May

Farmgate prices rose an annualized 17.4% in May, accelerating after a 15.5% increase in April, according to data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH).

The price of live animals and animal products rose 4.7%, as livestock prices climbed 3.5% and the price of animal products increased 7.3%.

Crop prices jumped 23.5% as grain prices climbed 38.8% and the price of industrial crops increased 38.1%.

Vegetable prices rose 4.4%, although the price of potatoes dropped 20.9% and fruit prices fell 3.2%. In January-May, farm gate prices increased 13.7% from the same period a year earlier.

The price of live animals and animal products fell 4%, grains prices jumped 33.9% and fruit prices rose 11.2%.
