Christmas data traffic on Telenor's network in Hungary exceeded last year's level by some 15%, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, the importance of online communication has increased, and this was already evident last Christmas: the holiday data traffic on Telenor's network increased by 30% compared to 2019, with the data traffic of video calls between family members accounting for a larger share of the total than before.

Although there were more opportunities for face-to-face meetings this year, many people greeted each other remotely out of caution, which is one of the reasons why there was an average 15% increase in mobile traffic between December 24 and 26 this year compared to 2020

Despite the year-on-year increase in festive network traffic, there was also a decrease on December 24 compared to the period before the holidays, in terms of total data, voice, and SMS traffic. Network traffic reached pre-holiday levels by December 26. Telenor argues that online video chat calls with friends and family accounted for a larger share of the data traffic on 24, while on 25 and 26 more and more people went online to share their holiday experiences or use streaming services to relax.
