ESA Technology Broker: Space Industry Solves Challenges of Everyday Life

Incubators

The Technology Broker program of the European Space Agency (ESA) emphasizes: space technology helps companies that operate in other industries. The Hungarian launch of the initiative was announced by Design Terminal at the recent Demo Day of the best Hungarian space startups being incubated by the innovation agency.

For almost a year and a half, Design Terminal, one of Central Europe’s most significant innovation agencies, has been carrying out the Hungarian incubation activities of the European Space Agency's business incubation (ESA BIC) program.

In recent months, 11 businesses have been provided with high-level professional (business, technical, and IPR) support, which opened the way for these enterprises to enter the sector. Startups pitched their solutions on January 31 at the ESA BIC Demo Day, where they could introduce themselves for the first time in front of space investors and experts.

ESA Technology Broker Program Starts Now

Design Terminal is constantly looking for new business development directions in the space industry, which led to the launch of the ESA Technology Broker program in Hungary in 2023. The program’s main purpose is to support the collaboration of companies in the space industry and those outside the sector. If a company faces challenges that the space industry can provide a solution to, it will be the assigned task of the ESA Technology Broker to connect them with the suitable company with space industry competencies.

"Since Design Terminal took over the domestic representation of ESA BIC, we have been trying to draw attention to the potential in the space industry for local companies and the entire Hungarian economy," says László Jónás, head of strategy and CEO of the innovation agency. "The Hungarian Technology Broker program focuses primarily on those industries in which we have been able to effectively help companies before: for example, the agriculture, the automotive, and the manufacturing industry."

Thanks to the ESA Spark Funding (which aims to speed up technology transfer between industries) companies starting cooperation within the Technology Broker program could apply for EUR 60,000 (equity free) to successfully transfer space industry solutions to traditional industries.

In addition to continuously recruiting startups for the ESA BIC Hungary program, Design Terminal is now also accepting applications from companies whose challenges can be solved by space industry technology through the ESA Technology Broker.
