Up to 290,000 families plan to make use of the government's new home renovation program in the next two years, according to a joint survey conducted by economic research institute GKI and building materials firm Masterplast in January, writes hvg.hu.

The representative survey found that 7% of all households would definitely participate in the program and 17% said they would probably take the opportunity to renovate their homes.

The two categories together represent 640,000 families. GKI said that just 180,000 homes were renovated in 2020. GKI noted that the government announced plans in the fall to subsidize half of home renovation costs, up to HUF 3 million, for families with one or more children from the start of 2021. From February, applicants for the subsidies can apply for preferential loans to cover the other half of their home renovation projects.
