The planned Budapest-Warsaw high-speed railway will also be able to branch to Vienna and Székesfehérvár (70 km southwest of Budapest), the Ministry for Innovation and Technology has said, according to origo.hu.
The communication highlighted that a high-speed connection between the capitals of the Visegrád countries could connect the region to the Western European high-speed rail network through an Austrian branch.
It is planned that trains could run at speeds of up to 320 km/h on some sections of the line over the next decade. The track could also be used by domestic intercities, offering a more competitive alternative to road transport for trips to Lake Balaton.
