Passenger numbers on Lake Balaton car ferries operated by Balatoni Hajózási (BAHART) reached 1 million in the morning on Thursday, crossing the threshold two days earlier than in the record year of 2019, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

BAHART said passenger numbers on the car ferry between Tihany, on the north shore, and Szantód, on the south, are up 149,000, or 18%, from the same period a year earlier. The ferry service has carried 58,000 more vehicles and 7% more bicycles so far this year.

The number of travelers on passenger ferries stands at over 485,000, up almost 101,300 from the same period a year earlier. By year-end, the number is expected to climb over 600,000, CEO Gábor Veigl said.

Peak season timetables for BAHART's ferry services are in effect until August 29.
