The Hungarian Tourism Agency puts the number of guest nights in Hungary this year at 34-37 million, the agency's head said in his latest podcast, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Zoltán Guller said the year is off to a strong start, supported by the 2022 EHF European Men's Handball Championship. Championship matches drew many foreign fans to Budapest, Debrecen, and Szeged in January, he added.

Revenue from commercial accommodations exceeded HUF 16 bln in the first three weeks of the year, climbing from just HUF 3 bln in the base period, when lockdowns were in force, he said.

Catering revenue rose over 90% to more than HUF 60 bln during the same period, he added.

For the full month of January, guest nights are expected to reach 1.5 mln, supported by the agency's winter campaign, he said.

In an earlier podcast, Guller estimated the number of guest nights at commercial accommodations in Hungary came close to 29 mln last year.

The Central Statistical Office (KSH) will publish full-year commercial accommodations data on February 7.
