Bookings for 518,000 guest nights have been made at commercial accommodations in Hungary for the month of April, the Hungarian Tourism Agency said on Tuesday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

The bookings, registered in a database updated daily with information commercial lodgings are required to provide, are well over the 304,000 guest nights spent by visitors in April 2020.

Bookings for the month of May stand at 625,000 guest nights, up 11% from the same month a year earlier.

The agency said Hungarians' wanderlust could be boosted by the close to 20% increase in SZÉP voucher card top-ups. Employers have transferred almost HUF 300 billion to the cards, which may be used to pay for commercial accommodations and recreation, thanks to tax preferences the government rolled out to support the tourism sector early in the coronavirus crisis.
