Hungary's government is allocating HUF 150 bln for developments in the Tokaj-Zemplén region of northeastern Hungary until 2024, Finance Minister Mihály Varga said in a post on Facebook, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Varga said he had discussed plans for Tokaj-Zemplén with the government commissioner for development in the region, György Wáberer.

"The Tokaj-Zemplén region could become the country's third-biggest tourism area after Budapest and Balaton," he said, outlining plans for a visitor center for the Tokaj winegrowing region, tourism attractions in the surrounding hills and upgrades of local cycling infrastructure.

Developments will take place in the cities of Sárospatak, Sátoraljaújhely, Pálháza and Abaújszántó, he added.

Wáberer, who earlier made a fortune in the road haulage business, is from Sátoraljaújhely.
