The University of Pécs, in partnership with winemaker Danubiana, has won HUF 430 million in European Union and state funding to develop grape-based gin products, the school told state news wire MTI.

The partners will examine physical methods for extracting aroma from grapes and draw on the distilling experience of Brill Pálinkaház, an award-winning maker of "palinka", the Hungarian eau de vie. The project aims to produce three types of gin - "green", "pink" and "red" - for commercial sale by the spring of 2025.

German-owned Danubiana contracts with local vineyards and sells close to 15 million bottles of wine a year. The company had net revenue of EUR 14.6 mln last year, including EUR 12.5 mln from exports, public records show.
