U.S. Reps bolster halt on Hungarian Holocaust Memorial
Jewish members of the U.S. House of Representatives are discouraging the Hungarian government to erect the controversial memorial for the Nazi occupation in 1944.
Critics of the monument say that the planned statue illustrating the German imperial eagle destroying the Angel Gabriel [representing Hungary], glosses over the role of Hungarians played in the deportations of approximately 400,000 Jews to concentration camps.
U. S. representative Henry Waxman, giving an interview to Wall Street Journal, urged the Hungarian PM to design a memorial, in co-operation with the Hungarian Jewish organizations, “that respects the experience of all Hungarians during World War II”.
Prominent Holocaust historian Dr. Randolph L. Braham returned the Medium Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, that he received in 2011, expressing his personal disagreement with the Holocaust memorial in plan. Giving an interview to JNS.org, he also criticized the renewal of anti-Semitism in Hungary referring to the growing popularity of far-right political party Jobbik.
