Ukraine and Hungary discuss gas situation in secrecy

Energy Trade

Hungary and Ukraine discussed ways to ensure secure their supply of energy at emergency talks held in Budapest yesterday, just days after Russia announced that it would cut off Ukraine’s natural gas supplies.

Though the content of the talks, between Tibor Navracsics, the Hungarian Minister of External Economy and Foreign Affairs, and Yuriy Prodan, the Ukrianian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry, were kept secret, some of the topics discussed have been reported.

Ukraine reportedly expressed its intention to import gas across Hungary from other European countries. Some sources say that Hungary is planning to extend its reserve infrastructure to provide gas surplus to the Ukraine. The sides also discussed the possible establishment of Adriatic gas corridor as soon as possible, and to create a Ukrainian-Hungarian-Croatian agreement for gas supplies.

The supplies to Ukraine from Russia’s Gazprom is an important issue for Europe, because much of the EU’s gas supplies are piped through that country. Gazprom emphasized that it is sending gas to the rest of Europe through Naftogaz.
