Acquisition of train car maker called 'national strategic' issue

The acquisition of a stake in rolling stock joint venture Bombardier MÁV is an issue of “national strategic significance", a government decree dated September 18 says. The decree was published in the official bulletin Magyar Közlöny.

A transaction of “national strategic significance” is exempted from the scrutiny of the Competition Office.

National Development Minister Miklós Seszták said at the beginning of August that negotiations with the foreign owner of Bombardier MÁV, a Canadian-based company, would wind up soon. However no further details were disclosed.

The company makes train carriages in Hungary.

In its decree, the government justifies its decision by saying it is in the public interest to preserve jobs and develop the domestic vehicle industry.
