Surveys: Fidesz lost 800,000 supporters

History

Ipsos Media, Advertisement, Market, and Opinion Research Institute announced that the popularity of Hungary’s governing party Fidesz dropped to 25 percentage points from October’s 35 percentage points, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported today.

This translates as a loos of approximately 800,000 supporters in two months, Ipsos says, while those who distance themselves from politics jumped from 30 percentage points to 39.

Public Survey Institute Medián says that the overall popularity of Fidesz dropped by 12%, which the institute calculates to mean approximately 900,000 voters. Medián adds that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s popularity dropped by 16 percentage points, while each of the other leading Fidesz politicians also saw an approximate 10 percentage point drop.

Medián believes that the main reason for Fidesz’ stall are tensions which have grown between Hungary and the United States since mid October, when it was revealed that six Hungarians were banned entry to the United States on suspicion of corruption.
