Strange relationship: Jobbik, MSzP, LMP unite on E.ON

In Hungary

It’s not every day that one sees left, far-left and far-right parties unifying even on a single issue; until yesterday, such cooperation of Jobbik, MSzP and LMP hadn’t been seen since the current Fidesz-KDNP took power in 2010. So newsworthy indeed, then, is Index’s reportage of a formal request from the three parties’ MPs to investigate the government’s March approval to purchase Hungary-based E.ON operations.

In the official request signed by at least the minimum 78 MPs required, the bill author(s) state in part that “the transfer of E.ON’s gas trade and storage operations to state ownership for Ft 261 billion is one of the most important purchases by the state in the past 20 years.”

Since the purchase from Germany-based E.ON, the government has shown a remarkable lack of transparency (by any standard) regarding the transaction, with Index reporting no success in attempts to get stakeholders to disclose any related documentation.

Nevertheless, as expected, proposals to amend the 2013 budget – the seventh such round – were approved in Parliament today by a vote of 218-24 with one abstention. The amendments will increase the budget deficit by HUF 171 billion, with at least HUF 71 billion earmarked for the E.ON transaction.
