Report: EC suspects ‘corruptionʼ in tenders

EU

European funding for construction on a stretch of M4 highway was blocked because the European Commission found overpricing in the tenders, according to a report that was published today by online daily hvg.hu and cites documents received from the EC.

According to hvg.hu, the Hungarian government earlier claimed that the EC raised concerns about tender procedures under the previous government, which was in power until 2010, but the documents produced by the EC reportedly do not mention any such problem. Instead, the news portal said, all the concerns the EC raised involve tenders during the current Fidesz government.

The report by hvg.hu says that the document chiefly covers concerns about tenders that took place between 2012-2013, and adds that the document is “full of” cases where the EC “suspects corruption”.

According to hvg.hu, the Hungarian government has been consulting with the EC over the issue since last October, as the EC found “crucial deficiencies” in the monitoring and controlling practices for EU funded projects.

The Hungarian government earlier said that the funding was suspended over a matter of a "technical" nature, and that is why it cancelled the contract with the EU after a cabinet meeting yesterday.
