Orbán prepares for “battle” over utility price cuts
Nobody should have any doubts that 2014 will be the year of the battle to protect the achieved results in cutting utility fees, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Sunday at the annual Kötcsei Polgári Piknik. The government has enacted mandatory reductions of 20% in increments to several utility costs for households and is prepared to take further measures.
Orbán stated the affected, mostly foreign-owned utility providers will in all likeliness put up serious resistance and take the issue to all available forums. Orbán stated that the government is ready to tackle the issue and to put an end to unwarranted profiteering in the utility sector.
On Monday, the prime minister’s Fidesz party took the price-cut plan even further, with representatives stating it will also mandate price cuts on coal and wood used in heating residences.
According to an MTI report, “Details of the plan will be presented at local forums.”
Back in June, Orbán stated he sought to reduce utility prices even further this autumn. ”The economy, I believe, will portray a stronger country in the second half of the year than now,” the PM told Info Rádió then. “If that is the case, we can cut the price of gas and electricity in September-October.”
