Orbán has no plans to become President

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán plans to run again for PM in the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2018, Orbán said in response to a query by a journalist today on whether the Prime Minister was entertaining the thought of becoming the President of Hungary in 2018, thereby replacing János Áder, Hungarian online daily index.hu reported.

“Being the President [of Hungary] is not a job that the country would benefit from should I assume that position,” Orbán reportedly said.

The journalist from commercial channel HírTV, owned by media oligarch Lajos Simicska whose friendship with Orbán recently soured, was seeking confirmation of hearsay that Orbán would replace Áder, whose term as President will expire in 2017. The journalist was also looking to clarify rumors that current Cabinet Chief János Lázár would run for the position of Prime Minister of Hungary. Orbán said he prefers being a prime minister, adding that only voters can take that position away from him.

The Hungarian media has been speculating of late that Orbán intends to appoint Fidesz Caucus Leader Antal Rogán to the post of Cabinet Chief in the near future. Rogán said in an interview over the weekend that he “would not comment” on recent hearsay concerning his new position. In the event that Rogán is appointed Cabinet Chief, the fate of Lázár, the current holder of the position, is unclear.
