Ombudsman asks gov't to discuss Norway funds
The governments of Hungary and Norway must consult on the interpretation of an existing contract that governs the management of Norway Funds, the ombudsman for basic rights was reported as saying.
Ombudsman László Székely issued an opinion on July 23 in which he stated that nothing in the contract refers to the Government Control Office (Kehi) in the role of a supervisory body overlooking the use of Norway Funds for the current period, human rights watchdog Transparency International (TI) reported on its website on Monday.
Székely said the Norwegian financial mechanism is governed by international contracts that Hungary had produced for the 2004-2009 and 2009-2014. In the first period, the Kehi was assigned the supervisory role, but in the second period Hungary’s Directorate General for the Audit of European Union Funds (EUTAF) was designated for the role, the ombudsman said.
