New education policies draw fire

Parliament

All the conditions are in place for a successful school year, according to the ruling Fidesz party, but the opposition criticized the government’s education policies on the first day of the fall term.

The start of the new school year has become easier for families because 60% of all pupils have free textbooks and the cost of the books has fallen by 20% on average, governing Fidesz party said, adding that teacher wages are continuing to rise.

Opposition Socialist party’s education spokesman, István Hiller, said the Klebelsberg Institute (KLIK), which is the central state agency for managing schools, was not appropriate for doing the job. Green party LMP said that the system of education should be changed from its roots up. Altogether 1,267,000 pupils are starting the new school year in Hungary.
