Lázár ready to ditch Russia, use 'war logic'

World

Cabinet chief János Lázár said that a €10 bln line of credit from Russia for new reactors at Paks does not “tie Hungary’s hands to Russia” and it would be possible to “step back” from the deal, Hungarian weekly Figyelő reported today. Regarding the Ukraine crisis, Lázár reportedly said that it may force Hungary into "crisis governance" to protect ethnic Hungarians.

“We have applied an international head hunter company to find the best people” for the Paks II. construction Lázár said, adding that “I hope that the Russians will commission western European suppliers too”.

Commenting on Paks II, Lázár said that Hungary chose the Russians for the construction because “they offered the most favorable financing and showed correct ambitions” but Hungary is not tied to the Russians and the debt contract “can be changed” anytime, in fact “if economic growth in Hungary becomes sustainable and interest rates decline, in five years we will be able to change the credit to a more favorable market credit”.

According to Lázár, “the most probable” scenario for the Ukraine crisis, is that he “is afraid” it would grow into a war, which would not allow the “era of consolidation” to happen, but would trigger “crisis governance, which is based on war logic”. Lázár said that he is concerned about Hungarians who live in Ukraine as "hostages" and Hungary needs to "be prepared to protect" those Hungarians.
