Kövér: Dispute in Fidesz is wrong
Reacting to the recent dispute between cabinet chief János Lázár and Fidesz founder and District XII Mayor Zoltán Pokorni, House Speaker László Kövér said late yesterday on HírTV that communication inside the governing Fidesz party should “again become free of unjustified mistrust and unfounded accusations”.
Pokorni had criticized the flamboyant, big-spending style of younger leaders in the Fidesz party, singling out Lázár for wearing an expensive watch on TV, and saying it increases the perception of corruption among Fidesz. He apologized for his remarks shortly after, following scathing criticism from Lázár.
Kövér, who like Pokorni, is one of the old-guard in the party, said he agrees with Pokorni’s criticism, adding that his opinion reflects the feelings of some Fidesz members and supporters.
Speaking about the proposed toll on ringroads and restricting shops to open on Sundays, Kövér said he is backing the measures as they serve the interests of Hungarian citizens.
But he said he was opposed to the proposal of mandatory annual drug tests for children, politicians and journalists. Kövér explained that “so far the idea is neither attractive, nor expedient”.
Discussing a planned free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States, Köver said that “the last nails for the coffin of Europe’s independence are being forged”. He said he believes there are risks to Europe in the free trade agreement between the United States and Europe called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
