Hungary and Turkmenistan talk about gas pipelines

Energy Trade

Hungarian Development Minister Miklós Seszták held talks in Budapest yesterday with his Turkmeni counterpart, Hojamuhammedov Baymyrat, deputy prime minister for oil and gas affairs, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

Baymyrat and Seszták discussed plans to triple natural gas production in the Central Asian country and to expand the pipeline system reaching Europe, Pakisatan and India. Such connections seem especially important,in light of Russias decision last week to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine. Hungary’s Development Ministry speculated that the expected gas industry developments of the next two decades in Turkmenistan could improve the energy security of the Central European region, thus of Hungary as well.

While oil and gas affairs talks are being held, Turkmen president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is scheduled to visit Hungary today. According to the plans he would be received by his Hungarian counterpart János Áder and meet House Speaker László Kövér.
