Goodfriend: Hungary's lack of transparency and ties with Russia an issue
“Some Hungarian public officials are involved in cases of corruption. We have identified some of them and are denying them entry into the United States,” Chargé d’Affaires André Goodfriend said in an interview with news portal 444.hu, regarding the unnamed Hungarians recently banned from the U.S.
Goodfriend wouldn’t elaborate further on the corruption charges but he did address a number of other pressing issues, such as the lack of transparency in public procurements and centralization of power by the FIDESZ government. Hungary’s dependency on Russian energy is another concern the U.S. is currently discussing with the Hungarian government. Goodfriend added that the U.S. is expecting Hungary to play a constructive role in the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis and to see that Russia’s behavior in the matter is unacceptable.
