EC launches infringement procedures against Hungary

EU

The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Hungary, charging that the country gave EC funds to pay for an electronic toll system without undergoing the appropriate tendering process, Hungarian news agency MTI reported today.

EC officials have been in contact with their counterparts in Hungary since April, but Budapest has not been able to convince Brussels that it was necessary to forgo a public procurement in the matter, MTI said.

The EC procedure is also addressing the issue of Hungary's alleged failure to transpose adequately a number of directives into national law and the country's adoption of a law on environmental product fees that is incompatible with European Union law, data posted on the EC's website today reveal.
