EC launches infringement procedure against “plaza ban”
The European Commission has launched an infringement procedure against Hungary concerning a ban on the construction of large-scale shopping centers and hypermarkets, according to information published today.
Though made on April 23, the decision was officially announced a few days later.
Commenting on the decision to launch the infringement procedure against what is locally known as the “plaza ban” law, Fidesz party spokesman Péter Hoppál stated that “the bureaucrats in Brussels are again taking the side of multinationals, instead of national interests.”
Hoppál reassured that the ruling party would continue to back the ban, which he reminded was designed to support Hungary-based SMEs.
The ban, which prohibits establishment of new shopping outlets of greater than 300 square meters in floor space, is in place until December 31, 2014.
