EC declines to comment on PM’s speech
The European Commission decided not to comment on the recent controversial speech by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who declared the end of liberal democracy in Hungary, EC spokesman Jonathan Todd announced on Wednesday.
EU agreements bind all members to maintain democratic values and the commission sees no reason for making early conclusions based on a speech made at a summer university course, the spokesman added.
Last Saturday, the Hungarian PM participated in the 25th Bálványos summer university and student camp, a major event for Romania’s ethnic Hungarian community. In a speech, Orbán said that Hungary would change its ideology to a “labour-based state of a non-liberal nature”. In his speech, the prime minister also criticized “paid political activists” whom he suggested were proponents of foreign interests in Hungary.
