Büki: Road blockade will take place
Zoltán Büki, the former MP of Együtt-PM, said the road blockade he is currently organizing will be held on March 1 from 5 pm, despite the “fine-tuning” the Hungarian Government made in January to legislation of the new road toll system approved by parliament in December, Büki told Hungarian commercial station ATV last week. So far, more than 7,000 people have confirmed via the event’s Facebook page that they are involved in the movement.
Büki said, that he is committed to holding the blockade given that the government did not withdraw but only “fine-tuned” its new road toll system, which requires motorists to buy county stickers to use Hungarian highways.
According to Büki's plans, the blockade will take place so long as the government does not abolish the system or withdraw its governance. Büki's concept of replacing the current government involves enlisting experts in the field to establish a new “constitution proposal”, which would be published online in February.
Büki's blockade will include the closure of Hungarian highways in 25-30 cities throughout the country, the closure of M0 and other important ring roads as well as the most frequented transport junctions, while detour roads will be left free for bypass traffic. In this way, Büki believes that the Hungarian police will have no authority to stop the demonstration, which will be made official very soon.
Büki also said that the electronic toll system, which was introduced in July 2013, generated a revenue of HUF 137 bln in 2014, and the government is planning to spend only HUF 57 bln of this amount to build new roads and maintain old ones. Büki questioned what the remainder would be spent on. He was also interested in how the government would spend funds collected through the county stickers system, as the majority of Hungarian roads are built using EU grants.
