August 20 also Global Day of Oveconsumption

Competition

As people through the country prepare to overindulge on the August 20 holiday, WWF Hungary is reminding that the date also marks a more inauspicious observation: Namely, that of The Global Day of Overconsumption, “the day on which the needs of mankind go beyond the Earth’s capacity.”

In 2012, Global Day of Overconsumption fell on August 22.

With 133 days left to go on the 2013 calendar, reports the organization, humanity has consumed all the global resources that the Earth can regenerate in one year. In a communique to local media, WWF Hungary cited Global Footprint Network data showing that under present modes of distribution, the resources of 1½ Earths are needed by mankind – and that two Earths would be needed by 2050.

In ratio of consumption to resource capacity, WWF Hungary notes Japan (with a 7:1 consumption of natural resources to in-country production), Qatar (6:1) and Switzerland (4:1) as among the chief offenders internationally, while Hungary out-consumed its biocapacity by a factor of 1.3 – just under the world average. In 2012, WWF International had named Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Denmark as the top five strictly in terms of ecological footprint size.

SUPPORT THE BUDAPEST BUSINESS JOURNAL

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.
Newspaper organizations across the globe have struggled to find a business model that allows them to continue to excel, without compromising their ability to perform. Most recently, some have experimented with the idea of involving their most important stakeholders, their readers.
We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
