Use of bank cards up 16.2% in H2 2013

Hungarians used bank cards to make 166 million in purchases in the second half of 2013, up 16.2% year-on-year, according to a report released today by the National Bank of Hungary (MNB). The total value of the purchases reached about HUF 1.264 trillion.

The number of remote purchases, the great majority ecommerce-based – climbed more than 35% to 10.8 million.

The number of bank cards issued was little changed during the period, although the number of cards with a contactless payment function grew rapidly, coming close to 1.8 million by year’s end or one-fifth of all cards.

The number of merchants that accept card payments continued to grow, reaching 74,000 with more than 90,000 POS terminals. About 36% of the terminals could accept contactless payments.
The number of ATMs in the country was little changed at 4,830.
