The University of Szeged is considering withdrawing Merkel’s honorary doctorate degree if she does not make time to accept the honor in person, online news portal vs.hu reported yesterday.

The research university made the decision to award Merkel with a degree two years ago, a logical move given Merkel was once a physical chemist and researcher, prior to her career as a politician.

The German Chancellor’s will pay a five-hour visit to Hungary on February 2, leaving little time to make it to Szeged. Her packed schedule already includes a face-to-face meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a press conference, a meeting with representatives of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (MAZSIHISZ) and a speech at the Andrássy Gyula University.
