Social forum fails to reach agreement on pay raises

Telco

The National Economic and Social Council, a broad social forum, failed to reach an agreement on next year's wages at a meeting today, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. The talks broke down after the government failed to respond to unions' request to discuss other demands as a condition to a wage agreement.

A draft agreement that has already been approved by the government and employers, and conditionally approved by unions, would raise the minimum wage by 3.5% and overall wages by 3-4%. If the sides fail to reach an agreement, the government will unilaterally announce next year's minimum wage and no recommendation on overall wage increases will be made.

The draft agreement would raise the minimum wage for unskilled labourers by HUF 3,500 to HUF 105,000 and the minimum wage for skilled workers by HUF 4,000 to HUF 122,000.
