Rosatom Chief: Paks upgrade on schedule
The construction of two new blocks at Hungary's sole nuclear power plant in Paks is proceeding according to schedule, Sergey Kiriyenko, head of Russia’s State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, told journalists in Budapest yesterday during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit, Russian news agency Tass reported.
"There is an exact schedule. We will follow every rule and regulation to the letter. The environmental impact study is being prepared, the process of obtaining permits is underway, everything will be undertaken in stages," Kiriyenko said, adding that "everything is on schedule, or even a bit ahead of schedule".
Although Hungary has not expressed intentions to do so, Kiriyenko said he could foresee the construction of further blocks at the plant. "Hungary's economy is growing rather quickly, and I would not exclude the possibility of the Hungarian government deciding on the construction of further blocks when the investment is successfully completed," he said, adding that the Hungarian government “has not made such a decision for the time being, therefore we will react to their decisions in line with their needs”.
The Rosatom chief ensured that the reactors under construction contain the “most modern post-Fukushima-type” technologies and are guaranteed to operate for at least 60 years, but he believes that in reality they can operate for up to 100 years.
He added that transit of spent fuel rods through Ukraine has proceeded smoothly and their delivery has taken place on schedule.
Hungary is taking out a €10 bln loan from Russia for the upgrade of its sole nuclear power plant to be undertaken by Rosatom.
