Despite the introduction of a Sunday closure law, a measure which came into effect on March 15 to prohibit retailers from opening on Sundays, retail sales in Hungary changed only slightly in March and April, Hungarian daily Népszabadság reported.

Based on data from the National Tax and Customs Authority (NAV), the paper said that weekly retail turnover reached on averaged HUF 150 bln in March and April, while figures were around HUF 145-150 bln in January and February.

The paper noted, however, that customer behavior changed significantly, with Thursday and Friday receiving the largest customer traffic and Sunday traffic dropping significantly. Stores under an area of 200 sqm and family-operated business are allowed to remain open on Sundays as well.
